Ms. Robyn is my Stylist

Ms. Robyn bought me this adorable fall outfit before I was even born. Well, it was finally cool enough and I've grown up enough to fit into the outfit. Don't I look pretty cute? (Also, I'm including a few pictures of my big brothers too, because I have to at least pretend that it's not all about me and my cuteness)! Love, Rylee Jane

P.S. I included this picture of me coming down the slide at the park. I love slides and feet first. . .it's for sissies!

Fall in Indiana

Even though we travelled to Indiana for a sad reason it was nice to spend time with Jon's family. I also feel sure that having Peyton around provided a nice distraction for everyone. With Jon's parents we visited an Apple Orchard and enjoyed some delicious, fresh hot apple cider (and yes, Robyn, you would have loved it). We also found time to visit the Martinsville Candy Kitchen which is a staple of Jon's childhood. They make homemade Candy Canes and they are wonderful! Although, they didn't have any the day we visited????? Jon says that it's kind of like the time we stopped at KFC and they didn't have any chicken but I assured him it was probably because we are still two months from Christmas. We also took Peyton to the park which is right next to a big hill that is the sledding site in Martinsville. We never seem to be there when there is enough snow to sled down it but I'm looking forward to that day. For myself-I'm not sure I want to witness my babies shooting down this hill on a sled toward an end that requires hay bales to stop you. Anyway, enjoy the pictures of fall in Indiana. Peyton with his cousins Clare (she is only two months younger) and Isabel.

Peyton on top of the sledding hill (we were a little afraid we were going to have to call the ambulance for Uncle Nick after climbing the hill but fortunately, for him, I did not take a picture of him at the top of the hill).

Ok, my tip for Tuesday, (although, I don't remember agreeing to this!) is the new makeup I've been using for the last three or so weeks. If you've ever watched late night infomercials you've seen it: Bare Escentuals/Bare Minerals makeup. I know you wondered if it really worked as well as it looked on tv. Well, it does, my sister-in-law, Stacy, was the first person I knew (in real life) who wore it and then my mom started wearing it. And even though it looked really great on both of them I still wasn't a believer. See, I have really oily skin so every kind of makeup I've ever tried has vanished off my face by noon. So, my theory was: the expensive stuff slides off my face just as quickly as the cheap stuff did so lately I've been buying the cheap stuff. Well, I finally tried Bare Minerals and it is by far the best makeup I have put on my face! It stays on much longer and prettier than any other makeup I have ever used. The starter kit is $60.00 but when you consider what you are getting it's a pretty darn good deal! And you can order from the internet or the new JCPenney's up at 1-4 and 27 has a Sephora which also carries the makeup.

Spencer BOY Post #2: In Memory of the Orginator of Firsts

He went by many names: Charles, Uncle Charlie, Chaz, Dad, but NEVER Chuck. I knew him simply as Grandpa. I lost my grandpa this past Monday after a long life of 94 years. Today we will say our final good-byes, but I wanted to share what my memories were of this Originator of Firsts. To be honest I am not sure if Originator is a word, but I think the name fits.
I am sure that you find this true as well, but I think those of us who are blessed to have known our grandparents tend to gravitate to one of them to form a special bond. I loved every one of my grandparents, but there was something about Grandpa Spencer and I that just clicked. My son Peyton loves superheros like Superman, Batman, Iron Man, and especially Spider-Man. Grandpa Spencer was my superhero and I was blessed to have this superhero impacting my life for 31 years.
You may be wondering why I call him the Originator of Firsts. Well, this week I have been able to do a lot of reflecting while spending time with my family. I realized that Grandpa introduced me to many firsts. Here are a few:

1. He was the first to show me how to shoot a shotgun.
~See I used to hunt too, clay pigeons not deer though
2. He was the first to take me fishing.
~Blue Gill ran in fear of our fishing skills
3. He was the first to teach me not to wear a hat at the dinner table
~My ribs are still sore from the elbows I received when I tried to test this lesson
4. He was the first to teach me Gin Rummy

5. He was the first to teach me you are never too young to put money on Gin Rummy
~He started taking my allowance at the age of 7
6. He was the first to teach me the game of eight ball (pool)
~I learned not to bet with the man after this
7. He was the first to take me 18 holes of golfing
~I scored lower then than I do now
8. He taught me you should hit your woods just like you hit your irons
~Easier said than done
9. He was the first to teach me the words to "I'm An Old Cowhand"
~We never got our duet recorded
10. He was the first to introduce me to the grandparent "Cookie/Candy Drawer"
~I have since come to learn that all grandparents have such a drawer to spoil grandchildren
11. He was the reason I looked forward to trips to the park
12. He was the first to teach me the term "Chick Magnet"
~Although he never used this word, it seemed when ever the two of us would go to Mustard's or Ponderosa that some lady (not my age) would come and sit with us because they thought it was so cute that Grandpa would bring his grandson to dinner. (One even invited herself back to his house to watch the IU game with us, he declined) I wonder if that is why he took me out so much?!? =)

Although, his last few years have been hard, I have not had to experience some of the mental difficulties that he at times showed. He would at times forget who people were or where he was. It seemed as though when I was able to visit with him that familiarity came back. Maybe it was just my wishful thinking, but he always seemed to perk up with my children and I would come to visit. I loved hearing stories about his adventures in Venezula and during World War II. He loved all of his great grandchildren.
My last visit with Grandpa Spencer was the end of the summer before school started. He has just broken his hip and had major surgery. For a moment they did not think that he was going to make it through the night. He was in very bad shape. The next morning, he had perked up and was able to take visitors. I was able to take Brady and Peyton to see their great-grandpa. They played the hospital bed version of tag and they both climbed up in bed with grandpa and snuggled. (They don't even do that with daddy) It was something to watch. We then had to come home.
That was the last time I saw Grandpa Spencer. Today, we say good-bye to my hero. I will miss him more than most will know. It has not sunk in yet that when I come back to Indiana to visit I will not be going over to have a "bedside" chat with Grandpa Spencer. That will be hard, but I know that he will never be gone because parts of him will live on in many of those that he has touched.
When we told Peyton that grandpa had gone to heaven he looked at me and said, "Daddy, I'm sad that Grandpa has to go to heaven. I am going to miss him." Peyton, I am going to miss my hero too!

Spencer Boy: Post #1: I Am So Proud Of HER!!!!!!

I have to say that I believe that I am breaking Man Law #123: Men should never blog. Needless to say, I feel compelled to write this blog myself as I am so very glad to have the opportunity to brag on my wife. (I could do this everyday, as she is a wonderful wife and mother, but this time she won a big prize)
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to be my wife's guest as she was recognized as being one of the top 100 teachers in Florida to show learning gains on the 2007 Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test. (FCAT) I must say that I think that I was more excited hearing about her award than I was hearing that I was the Highlands County Teacher of the Year. I kept trying to tell people that not only was I not the best teacher in the county, but I wasn't even the best teacher in the house. I am very proud to say that this helped prove my case!
Angie was treated to two days at the Lake Buena Vista Hotel and Spa and a variety of guest speakers. I was looking forward to a day of lounging around the hot tub and catching a new movie. Unfortunately, my day of spa treatment was spent at the Tire Kingdom. (This is a blog in itself) While I was there Angie was given an excellent lunch and then was inspired by Ron Clark. Ron Clark is a teacher and founder of the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA. I was very jealous as he is what all teachers should strive to be. Angie said that he did not disappoint.
After that Jeb Bush talked to the outstanding teachers and told them that since they did such a wonderful job and the sponsors were so generous they would be receiving 1,700 dollars instead of the expected 1,000. (This paid for my trip to the Tire Kingdom)
Finally, I was able to come and enjoy the evening with Angie and swell with pride while my wife was recognized. Highlands County was very well represented as Kendra Fout (my teammate from Woodlawn) and Patricia Carter (gifted teacher in Lake Placid). Each of them were brought on stage after a wonderful speech given by Debbie Phelps. They were given a twenty pound award (not exaggerating) , a free 7 day cruise from Royal Caribbean, two tickets to Disney World and Sea World, two tickets to have lunch with an astronaut, and many other gift certificates. Jeb knows how to throw a party!!
More than all the prizes and the recognition, I was just proud to be the man behind the wife. She works so hard to do what is best for children. She has taught me quite a bit about teaching and I am so happy that people are starting to notice. Words cannot express how proud I am of her!!!! I guess I will keep her for another few years! =)

Have a "Super" Halloween!

Yes, for those of you who just fell off your chair because I'm updating my blog, it is for real. I really am updating it! Since today is officially Halloween I am posting pictures of my little superheroes even though they were actually taken a week ago at the Woodlawn Fall Fun Fest. Unfortunately, my kiddos won't be together for the official holiday because Jon, Peyton, and I are actually in Indiana because Jon's grandfather, Charles, passed away this week and we are here with Jon's family (A tribute to Charlie will follow in a later post). So anyway, here are my little crimefighters-villians everywhere should beware! Off to save the world!

"Anniversary" Weekend

September 12, 13, & 14th Jon and I headed to St. Augustine to celebrate our anniversary. Our actual anniversary (the 21st) was the next weekend but my parents were busy that weekend, and when someone agrees to watch all three of your children. . .well, it goes unsaid, you work around their schedule. Anyway, Jon and I enjoyed our alone time together immensely!

The first morning I woke up early-out of habit and couldn't go back to sleep so I did something I've always wanted to do: watch the sunrise over the Atlantic. I know my Aunt Cathy is a big sunset person and I do enjoy those but the sunrise was particularly amazing. Of course, God was showing off a bit that morning too. Just watching the sunrise was a huge reminder of how great our God is, but then just in case anyone was in doubt of that (not me!) a shooting star shot across the still dark sky. It was pretty amazing and humbling. I took some beautiful pictures and then did some of my bible study sitting right there with my toes in the sand.
After a stop at Starbucks (of course) we headed to the Fountain of Youth, the Castillo de San Marcos (the fort) and downtown St. Augustine for history, food, and browsing. We visited the Fountain and I was hit with the reality of walking the same steps as the first European ever to set foot in Florida. Yes, I'm a history nerd and yes, I like this kind of stuff. And of course, I drank the water! We grabbed lunch downtown at a Mexican Restuarant with a great view and then headed to the fort for a little more history. After the fort we shopped a little, browsed a lot and walked even more. Then headed back to the hotel for a nap (me) and Notre Dame football (Jon).

The actual markers left by Ponce de Leon so he could find the fountain when he returned. They have not been moved, only unearthed.

We finished our day at a great, out-of-the-way restuarant. It is called the Creekside Diner and the food and atomosphere was wonderful.
